This 1976 film is written by and directed by and stars Roman Polanski. It is a disturbing story of a hapless office worker who moves into a spooky Paris apartment house. Once lodged inside its walls, he becomes obsessed with the previous occupant, who committed suicide, and the belief that his neighbors are trying to kill him. It is based on a novel by Roland Topor.
Others in the cast include: Isabelle Adjani, Melvyn Douglas, Jo Van Fleet, and Shelley Winters. Melvyn Douglas has turned in many fine performances in such great films as: Being There, The Seduction of Joe Tynan, The Candidate, Hud, and other films going all the way back to 1932. He played the father opposite Paul Newman in Hud, which is one of Newman's finest roles, and provided us with an excellent character study of responsible behavior.
Key question: If you had been some of the neighbors, what might you have done to help this person so that the ending was changed to a more positive one?
