Unitarian Church of Tullahoma, Tennessee

Presentation by Dr. Charles H. Frost on November 5, 2000

Over 40 years ago, I wanted to be a minister. I belonged to a fundamentalist Christian church. I started college and learned about evolution. I talked to my pastor. He said I could not believe in evolution. This puzzled me. In the bible it says that for God, a thousand years can be like a day or a day like a thousand years.(But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 2Peter 3:8.)

Einstein not withstanding, I was confused and felt that what my pastor was saying didn't make sense and was not consistent with the bible…..just as he felt that what my college teachers were saying didn't make sense and was not consistent with the bible.

I lost my way, I did not become a minister, I stopped going to church for decades. However, I discovered another calling, another way to serve God. I became a social worker and have been one now for 38 years.

I tell you this as I feel it to be a sad story as the conflict was unnecessary. I have come to understand that God's teachings and the teachings of science are not only compatible, but, I believe that when you appreciate the messages of science, then you are more likely to appreciate the messages of God. For most of our existence we have taken God's word and used faith to support our beliefs. Now we can use both faith and FACTS.

15% of America's children are showing outward signs of incipient sexual maturity by age 8! (Time, October 30, 2000, p. 68). Why? Growing obesity, hormones and other chemicals in our food, and MTV are all potential factors.

Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Proverbs 27:5

Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a fattened calf with hatred. Proverbs 15:17

He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity, and honor.

Proverbs 21:21

The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.

Psalm 145:20

But whoever fails to find me harms himself; all who hate me love death.

Proverbs 8:36

Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

Psalm 97:10

Remember now, most of Christ's disciples were tortured and murdered for their beliefs. Most early Christians were severely persecuted, many were tortured and executed. If you read the lives of the Saints you are reading the lives of martyrs for the most part. How, therefore, can the above make sense???

Praise be to God, who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me!

Psalm 66:20

Many are the woes of the wicked, but the Lord's unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in him.

Psalm 32:10

The traditional answer has been that those who do not love their neighbors, who do not love God, will be punished in the after life. But I do not think this is a very effective way of viewing God's message.

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.

Mark 14:38

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

1 Corinthians 10:13

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Matthew 7:19-21

Remember the great commandments on which all the law is built are love of God and love of neighbor. (Matthew 22:37-40)

Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

Mark 11:24

And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Mark 11:25-26

If you want to draw, you must shut your eyes and sing.

Pablo Picasso

If you want to be a great artist, you must first learn to express your joy.

If you want to love God and love your neighbor, you must first learn to express your joy.

For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.

Mathew 25:29 (Also in Mark 4:25.)

Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

Mark 9:23
