We got a late start today due to the rain. In good news, however, our new unit covers held up despite the winds and heavy rains.

Over the night and into the morning, we collected enough water on top of our covers to make a small swimming pool.

Speaking of swimming pools, units C15 and 16 are still below the water table. Unfortunately, these units are not quite deep enough for Matthew to practice his dives.

We also had our first injury of the season today. Richard sprained his elbow while setting up a canopy so that his group could work in the shade. He is okay but will be taking it easy for the next few days. There is a lesson to be learned here I’m sure. Perhaps it’s “don’t do nice things for other people” or maybe it’s “canopies do more harm than good.” We will have to get back to you all on that.

In addition to our late start, we had to leave about an hour ahead of schedule to avoid a thundershower. Given our abbreviated workday, we didn’t find too much in the way of artifacts. However, the Unit C21 crew found a few interesting historic artifacts from the plowzone including several pieces of ceramics and glass, including the shard to the left, which appears to be from an early twentieth-century medicine vial.

For the first time in what seems like an eternity, there is only a slight chance of rain tomorrow. Not only does this mean that we may get a full workday in, we might also be able to see tomorrow’s sunrise at Dr. Smith’s annual summer solstice event at the mound site a few hundred yards north of our excavations.
