County Abbreviations for Archaeological Site Numbers

Official Archaeological Site Survey Numbers for sites in Tennessee are assigned by the Tennessee Division of Archaeology. Archaeological sites are recorded using a "trinomial system" established by the Smithsonian Institution -- (1) state code; (2) county code; and (3) site number. The state code for Tennessee is "40". Two-letter county abbreviations are given in the table below. The site number is a sequential number assigned as sites are recorded. For example, site 40KN1 is: 40=Tennessee; KN=Knox; 1=first site recorded in Knox County, Tennessee.
