Written Reports

Research Participation:
The last day to participate in research is Monday, April 22, 2013. Please note that people under the age of 18 may not participate in research.

You will need to be able to access your MTSU email account to use the research pool. If you are having trouble accessing your email account, call the OIT Help Desk at 898-5345.

Please be courteous when participating in research. Silence all cell phones prior to the beginning of the research, do not take calls during the research session, and try not to disturb other students during a research session.

The research pool server is located at: http://mtsu.sona-systems.com/. Instructions for using the system can be downloaded as a Word document or a pdf file (these are longer versions of the Getting Started with the MTSU Experiment Sign-Up System in your text).

Please note:

If you try to log in and you get an error message that begins with "authentication expired," your browser security is too tight. You must accept some cookies to use the site. If you are using a lab computer, ask the lab administrator if you can change that setting.
Students are limited to TWO credits from online studies. If you receive a message that you may not receive any more credit for online studies, then you may not receive any more credit for online studies. Nobody can change that, so there is no need to request a special favor to do more online studies.
For security reasons, your research pool password is not the same as your Pipeline password. You can change the password to something more memorable, but we advise against using your Pipeline password.
If you are not receiving reminder or credit emails, check that your inbox is not full.

Written Reports:
The last day to turn in a written report is Monday, April 22, 2013 (by 4:00 PM) even if the class does not meet on Mondays. Written reports should be given to your instructor. Written reports must be typed on the written report form. You may download the Written Report form as a Word document.

Written report articles are on reserve in the library. You may use the library’s e-reserve system to locate written report articles. Go to the library’s page at http://library.mtsu.edu/

Choose “Course Reserves” in the "Resources" section near the middle of the page.

Choose “Instructor” from the drop-down menu (this should be the default setting).
Enter “psychology all instructors” in the box.
Click “Submit” and the articles will appear.
Click the title of the article you want, then click “Click here to launch e-reserve.”
The password to open the articles is “psyc1410”

Information for researchers:

The last day to collect data is Monday, April 22, 2013.

Report problems to the research pool director (shortages of forms, cards, etc.).

There are two parts to the instructions for researchers: MTSU Psychology department policy and guidance on setting up experiments in the research pool system. ALL researchers MUST abide by the policy. It is your responsibility to read the policy and pay attention to the rules. You may download the instructions as a Word document or a pdf file.

To get an account, follow the procedure based on your category below:

Faculty: Request an account (email the research pool director).
Student researchers: Complete the pool policy quiz available here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHN6OVBEdGtMQUZzT011RzUyNU5mb3c6MQ#gid=0

The quiz will automatically be emailed to the faculty supervisor.
The faculty supervisor will forward the quiz to the research pool director.
If the student wants access in a later semester, they may email the research pool director and indicate that they have a quiz on file.

Visit http://www.mtsu.edu/irb/ for IRB forms and instructions.

The IRB form requires sign-up information (to approve the language you will use to solicit participants). Please include the following information with your IRB application:

Project title (the same title you will use in Sona; it does not have to be the same as the title used for the IRB form itself).
Brief abstract (a sentence or two describing the project for the experiments list). (NOTE: The system labels this as optional, but MTSU policy requires a brief abstract.)
Detailed description (a full description, including risks and benefits, that will enable students to make an informed choice about signing up).

Once you have IRB approval for the sign-up language, you can copy that information into the experiment description used by the system.

Room reservation customs and instructions are available here. Faculty should be sure that students have reviewed these customs.

Rooms controlled by the Psychology department:

To access the Google Calendar for JH 238 and 240, JH 307, JH 105, JH 341, JH 237, and AMG 117 A B and C reservations follow these steps:

Go to the Google calendar page (link below in this section). (You may need to log out of your current calendar before you can access one of the lab calendars.)
Enter the user name for the lab you want to reserve.
Enter the correct password.
Click "Sign in."

JH 238 and JH 240 are the observation lab. The rooms may be reserved independently. If you need access to the control room during an observation study (or privacy in 238 during a study) be sure to reserve both.

JH 238 is the observation room itself. The user name is "jh238lab" and the password is "jh238labpass"
JH 240 is the control room. The user name is "jh240lab" and the password is "jh240labpass"
NOTE: These calendars are linked so that you see both calendars at the same time, but you can only reserve on one calendar at a time.

JH 307 is a shared research space, and is also an ePrime computer lab with eight computers. Please direct participants to wait in the Jones Hall lobby and post a sign there instructing them to wait quietly for their experimenter to come and get them. Include these instructions in the Sona system when you set up the experiment. Please do not direct students to gather in the hall outside JH 307.

For JH 307 the user name is "jh307lab" and the password is "jh307labpass"

JH 105 is a shared research space, and is also an ePrime computer lab with seven computers. Please direct participants to wait in the Jones Hall lobby and post a sign there instructing them to wait quietly for their experimenter to come and get them. Include these instructions in the Sona system when you set up the experiment. Please do not direct students to gather in the hall outside JH 105.

For JH 105 the user name is "jh105lab" and the password is "jh105labpass"

JH 341 is a single-participant testing lab. There is also a single computer with ePrime and a voice key.

For JH 341 the user name is "jh341lab" and the password is "jh341labpass"

JH 237 is a small computer lab with one computer. This computer has ePrime and a voice key. This room also has furnishings that allow it to be used for testing purposes, and it is across the hall from JH 238/240, so it can be reserved with them to maximize the number of individual testing sessions taking place at one time.

For JH 237 the user name is "jh237lab" and the password is "jh237labpass"

AMG 117 has three rooms that can be reserved. Each room has two or so computers and desks for single participants.

For AMG 117 A the user name is "amg117alab" and the password is "amg117alabpass"
For AMG 117 B the user name is "amg117blab" and the password is "amg117blabpass"
For AMG 117 C the user name is "amg117clab" and the password is "amg117clabpass"
NOTE: These calendars are linked so that you see all three calendars at the same time, but you can only reserve on one calendar at a time.

To reserve rooms, highlight the time on the appropriate date and enter your event. Please include contact information on your event, including name, email, and phone.

Be careful not to remove or overlap with other people's events.

Rooms controlled by HHP:

AMG 217 has two rooms that can be reserved:

AMG 217 B is a small computer lab and houses the eye-tracker.
AMG 217 C is a small room with a conference table and projector.

To reserve these spaces, check the google calendar page for the lab room you want. If the time you want is available, email Missy Mullins (Missy.Mullins@mtsu.edu) with the room and times you wish to reserve.

Access your calendar by putting in your google login information. If you don't have an account, request one.
On your calendar page, click "Other calendars" on the lower left side, and type the correct address below where it says "Add a friend's calendar"
Type in the email address for the lab you want:

Each lab will be in its own color on your calendar. If the lab you want is available at the time you want it, email your request to Missy Mullins (Missy.Mullins@mtsu.edu).

Information for instructors:

The last day to participate in research is Monday, April 22, 2013. The last time to turn in written reports to be graded by the pool GA is Monday, April 22, 2013 (4:00 PM) regardless of the class meeting days/times.

Report problems to the research pool director.
