Seminar on Careers in Psychology Log
(After-Action Reports and Ruminations)
Professor Will Langston

From 11/24/14 We only have one more meeting.

Bonus assignment opportunity: You get credit for an assignment if you answer the question "tell us about yourself" from your graduate school interview. 30 second limit.

Remember, by the end of the semester, you need to have completed 4 assignments for credit (any four you choose), 8 quizzes with an average of 70%, and you have to (at a minimum) come to class. You can document participation by completing discussion items if you miss class. All absences can be excused if you communicate with me.

Catch up if you're behind on quizzes. If you don't have 8, go back and take the ones that are posted; you have to put the page number with your answers.

Have a good Thanksgiving, see everyone on the 1st.

We will also have a quiz on Monday that explicitly covers chapter 9 of your textbook. Read it carefully!

If you did not get a 10 on a quiz, you should be looking up the answers in the book and putting the correct answer with the page number it came from. If you missed a quiz from the last two weeks, feel free to complete it and put the page numbers on all of the answers. Don't make it a habit to miss quizzes and then take them at home, we need your input to the discussions. Also, quizzes expire after two weeks...

I'll see everyone on the 17th

We're working on experimental psychology/getting involved in research, and we're going to start thinking about careers

Have a nice fall break, and I'll see everyone on the 20th!
From 9/29/14 Thanks to everyone for your support of our guest lecturers. I hope that some of you were able to clarify your plans a bit, and maybe we even changed some minds.

It's back to business this week:
  • I'll talk about experimental psychology
  • We'll talk about careers for a bit
  • We'll take quiz 3
  • We'll start assignments 1 and 2
See everyone on Monday!
From 9/22/14 Dr. Ujcich-Ward's clinical psychology powerpoint is posted on the class web page.

For next week, read up on I/O psychology (links on the class web page) and be prepared to ask questions. Remember, I frown on people skipping class when we have a guest, even if you don't think that career path interests you.

See everyone on Monday!
From 9/15/14 Most of the links from Dr. Holt's school psychology powerpoint, as well as the powerpoint itself, are posted on the class web page. For the ones inside the NASP web page, you can click around on the page.

For next week, read up on clinical psychology and be prepared to ask questions. Remember, I frown on people skipping class when we have a guest, even if you don't think that career path interests you.

See everyone on Monday!
From 9/8/14 1. Your only discussion items for the next three weeks are to do a little reading on each area before a guest lecturer comes to discuss it. Notes on each area are on the main web page.
9/15—School psychology, Dr. Aimee Holt
9/22—Clinical psychology, Dr. Kim Ujcich-Ward
9/29—I/O psychology, Dr. Judith Van Hein

You are expected to come to these even if you don't think you're interested in the area being covered. Be attentive, ask questions…

2. If you missed any items on the upper division form quiz, please keep in mind that the grade on the quiz is not that important, but these could keep you from graduating. So, check into the things you didn't understand and remember the number one rule is to check it all for yourself.

3. I am still accepting questions for our guest lecturers. These are a good way to document participation.

See everyone Monday the 15th.
From 8/25/14 Hello Seminar on Careers:

What you need to do/bring/turn in for the next class or soon thereafter:
1. Go to the psychology department web site (http://www.mtsu.edu/psychology/) and download your upper division form.

You really should figure out how to navigate the web site, but here are "cheater's links" if you need them:
Regular psychology major (declared PRIOR to fall 2014): http://www.mtsu.edu/psychology/grad/undergrad/MAJUPDIV13-14.pdf
Regular psychology major (declared fall 2014 or AFTER; candidacy rules apply):
I/O psychology major: http://www.mtsu.edu/psychology/grad/undergrad/IOUPDIV13-14.pdf

Print your form, fill it out to the best of your ability, and bring it to class on the 8th. The quiz on the 8th will be open note, and the "notes" are that form.

If you've been working with your advisor then you have this done and you can just bring the form you've been working on.

2. For the slide in the notes screen-shotted below, fill in the two blanks.

a. Find a site that explains why psychology majors are so dis-satisfied with their major.

b. Just to be fair and to not only look at things we like, find something to rebut why you should earn a psychology degree. (This is a Discussion item)

<The message continues below this screen shot>
Powepoint slide

3. You will need to submit a question for each of our guest lecturers (school psychology, clinical psychology, I/O psychology). One question per topic. Send those to me via email as you think of them. I'll figure out a way to let you vote on which ones we ask. Obviously, we need those in time to vote, so send them early if you want your question to participate in the voting. (This is a Discussion item)

What are we ruminating about this week?
1. Looking at what employers want from you as a psychology major, what can you do to BE that? How can you use your time at MTSU to create documentable evidence that you ARE that?

2. If a lot of psychology majors are unhappy with the choices they made, what can you do to make sure you don't turn out unhappy with the choices you made? Find out why they're unhappy, try to learn from that.

3. If there's anything you want to be sure we include, let me know and I can try to build it in.

See everyone on the 8th!
