Project Director: Kevin E. Smith, Professor of Anthropology

Old City Cemetery
300 Block, East Vine Street, Murfreesboro Tennessee

Information on this web page is compiled from two sources: (1) a listing completed by Jill K. Garrett on 15 September 1968 and 8 November 1968; the introduction to the original document states: "Inscriptions marked (*) come from Mrs. Acklen’s book and mean that this stone cannot be found today [1968]. Inscriptions marked (**) were made in 1938 by WPA and those marked this way cannot be found today [1968]"; and (2) a listing compiled in 1980 by historic preservation students at Middle Tennessee State University (whether this list was actually compiled by surveying existing monuments is unclear -- the list may have used existing monuments, earlier lists, and documentary resources). The monuments were cleaned by sandblasting in 1976 and many were undoubtedly much harder to read by 1980. Notes from Garrett as in parentheses (). Notes from 1980 are in brackets [].

The entries below are re-typed from the two existing documents. I offer no guarantees as to the accuracy of this information -- please accept them just as an attempt to make information on the possible interments at the cemetery more accessible. A re-survey of the surviving monuments will be done over the next few months and that information will be added to this listing. However, the earlier surveys undoubtedly contain monuments that are now missing.

Marker "quadrant" (northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest) refer to 1980 records -- see map below.
